High fashion and the ballet

After a relaxed morning and early afternoon on the computer, I set out for Yerevan’s Fashion Week at Teryan 91. The Yeremyan Academy, where many of the events are being held, is perfect for the occasion. The outdoor colonnade serves as a made-to -order runway, and the classical architecture adds a lot of drama to the occasion. I found it interesting to see what local designers are interested in and the materials they are using. In a few instances, styles referenced Armenian traditional crafts (embroidered purses, needlework accessories) and traditional “taraz” costumes (such as the “arakhchi” (headdress). Festival-goers rose to the occasion by dressing up; my outfit for the day was decidedly uninspired!

I still had 40 minutes before the ballet Gayané at 6 pm, so I decided to go for an ice cream at Rubicone, as recommended by Camille a few days ago. I wanted to try the flavour “Yerevan Jan”: nuts, dried fruits, and cognac! When I asked for it, I was told that they had a two-for-one deal on this flavour; if I bought one “Yerevan Jan”, I could have a second serving of any flavour. Just when I was wondering what I would do with two ice creams, Phoebe (from yesterday’s hike) walked in! Problem solved: we both walked out with a delicious ice cream.

Phoebe decided to join me at the Opera House for Gayané. AND, I just happened to have an empty seat beside me, so we sat together. (Sometimes, things just work out!) We did a little post-ballet grocery shopping at Yerevan City (rose petals, black lavash, and string cheese for me; sadly I put back the lion’s mane mushrooms for fear I wouldn’t cook them properly). And then, a lovely walk back home!
